Who to pick in Week 1
One game towers over the rest of the Week 1 board: the Los Angeles Chargers are favored by 10.5 over the Arizona Cardinals. That's more than a field goal clear of every other favorite on the slate, and in a survivor pool the widest spread is your single best piece of evidence. If you want the safest play this week, that's where the market is pointing.
Behind the Chargers, the Jacksonville Jaguars (-7.5 over Cleveland) and Detroit Lions (-7 over New Orleans) are the next tier of comfort. Everything else on the board is a coin flip dressed up as a game.

Notice the cliff after Philadelphia: seven teams are bunched at -3.5, and four more sit at -2.5 or lower. There simply aren't many strong favorites this week, which makes the top of the board more valuable.
The safest play: Chargers, with a catch
A 10.5-point spread is as safe as Week 1 gets. But here's the trade-off every survivor player has to weigh: the Chargers are exactly the kind of team you might want in your back pocket for a later week when the board is thin. Spend them now and you can't spend them again.

Solid alternates: Jaguars and Lions
If you'd rather hold the Chargers, Jacksonville (-7.5) and Detroit (-7) are the reasonable fallbacks. Both are backed by a full touchdown or more from the market — comfortably above the pile of near-toss-ups below them. Either lets you keep your biggest name in reserve while still leaning on a real favorite.
The team to avoid: Dallas
The Dallas Cowboys are the classic Week 1 trap. Big-brand teams pull survivor players in every season, but the line here has Dallas at just -2.5 on the road against the Giants. That's barely a favorite — a two-and-a-half-point road spread is close to a coin flip. The name is bigger than the edge. Same logic applies to the Bills (-1.5) and Vikings (-1.5): recognizable teams, but the market gives them almost no cushion. Don't let a logo talk you into a pick the spread doesn't support.
The bottom line
You get one team, and only one, in your survivor pool this week — pick a team and you can never use it again all season. The Chargers are the safest number on the board, with the Jaguars and Lions as strong alternates if you want to bank a big favorite for later. Whatever you do, avoid the sub-field-goal favorites just because they're familiar.
