Texans Defense Shake-Up: HOU Survivor Read for Weeks 5-7

Oct 9, 2026

DeMeco Ryans is making a change in Houston. The Texans head coach has reclaimed defensive play-calling duties from coordinator Matt Burke, one of two teams to swap play-callers this week. Burke, for his part, framed it plainly: sometimes you force a change to spark one.

It's the kind of in-season move that signals a staff looking for answers on one side of the ball — and that's worth filing away before you lock in a Texans survivor pick.

What it means for a Texans survivor pick

The spread, not the headline, is where the real survivor signal lives — and Houston grades out as a favorite in all three of its upcoming games:

  • Week 5: HOU at Tennessee, favored by 7.5
  • Week 6: HOU at Jacksonville, favored by just 1.5
  • Week 7: New York Giants at HOU, favored by 5.5

The Week 5 trip to Tennessee is the cleanest of the three. A 7.5-point road favorite is a respectable survivor option, and if you've already burned Houston's better future matchups, this is a reasonable spot to deploy them. The caveat is the timing: a defense that just changed play-callers mid-season is a unit in flux, so the bigger-margin game is where you'd rather lean.

Week 6 is the one to avoid. A 1.5-point edge on the road at Jacksonville is essentially a coin flip, and no survivor player should spend a team there. Week 7's home game against the Giants (-5.5) is sturdier and the better backup option if you're holding Houston for later. As always, confirm the matchup and line are still in your favor before pulling the trigger — a mid-season coaching shuffle is exactly the kind of variable that can swing a close game.
