Hawks Survivor Watch: Jalen Johnson, the Closer Question
Oct 8, 2026
The Hawks are hunting for a closer
Atlanta enters the season with a roster that looks complete on paper — except for the one thing that decides playoff games: a reliable closer. The open question is whether Jalen Johnson can grow into that role and become the guy the Hawks lean on in crunch time. That's a long-term development story, but it carries a short-term read for your survivor card.
What it means for your survivor pick
A team still sorting out its late-game identity is exactly the kind of situation to be cautious with early. Look at Atlanta's Week 1 slate: they open as road underdogs at Orlando (ORL -2.5) on Oct. 21, then visit Charlotte on Oct. 23 with no line posted, before hosting Houston on Oct. 25. The one spread we have points the wrong way — a Hawks road game where Orlando is favored — so ATL is not a clean survivor pick in that opener. If you're eyeing Atlanta at all, the home date against Houston is the more interesting spot, but there's no number to lean on yet. Early weeks reward patience; don't burn a strong team on a coin-flip closer question.
